grew up in a working class (arguable lower middle class) neighborhood in Chicago. Since then I have had the oppurtinity to live in the burbs, Louisville, Ft Polk LA, the Seattle burbs and Paris 9for 7 months). I am currently living in Sioux City, IA. The community here has a very low quality of living. Educational and job oppurtunities are limited. My question her is pertaining to Sioux City's "middle class" (which doesnt seem very middle class compared to the rest of the country). Ive noticed that what they consider middle class here would be working or lower class in the other places I have lived. There is also alot a deviant behavior here. The "middle class" here is plaqued by filthy living conditions, alcoholism, meth use and domestic violence. There is also a rampant subculture of infedility and "swinging". I am shocked at how liberal (not that they believe in liberalism, its more about wanting to see upper class people taxed) and atheistic it is here. I thought rural areas were the opposite. Most of the lower middle class here is culturally less akin to the shiekness and trendiness of the burbs or the conservativeness of the Chiicagoan, instead adopting mannerism and interests more like the "hillbilly" (no offense I dont know the PC term for those peoples). It is not uncommon to see middle aged men involved in public fistfights and heckling or women of the same age involved in behavior that would make a Mannheim Rd. streetwalker blush. Ive even seen professionals such as police, teachers and nurses engaged in behavior like this. Ive even had a college professor tell us about some group sexual encounters she had in college.
